Answer
A diode is an electronic component that allows electric current to flow in only one direction. The diode acts as a valve for electric current, as it contains two primary electrodes, the anode (positive electrode) and the cathode (negative electrode), and when the diode is connected to the mains source in the correct way, the diode allows current to pass from the anode to the cathode while hindering the passage of current in the opposite direction. Diodes are used in many electronic devices and electrical circuits for purposes such as converting alternating current into direct current in a process called straightening.
